Susan Diane Kahrs was born in Loup City, Nebraska, on September 21, 1951, to Homer and Patricia (Thompson) Gifford. The third of five children, she graduated from Grand Island High School in 1969. Shortly after, she married the love of her life and soulmate James Kahrs on October 26, 1969, at the United Congregational Church in Christ in Franklin. Together they raised three children, Deborah, Angela, and Michael, later welcoming Cody Anderson to the family. Susan passed away in her home on November 6, 2025.
Susan quickly went from city girl to farmer’s wife. She learned that a pickup truck with stock-racks can’t be parked in the garage and which way to drive over the turn rows in a corn field. She became immersed in farm life, doing chores, delivering meals to the field, and helping during harvest, all the while raising a family. She was very active with her children’s activities until they were out of school. She worked at Recollections in Franklin for many years engaged in her favorite activity, making crafty items. She also enjoyed hanging wallpaper and doing interior painting on the side for others.
Susan was a member of the United Congregational Church in Christ, serving on many committees and teaching Sunday School classes to the younger children. She was a happy, caring person, always there to help anyone in need with a smile and a hug. She was known by all that knew her for her kindness, compassion, and contagious laughter that brought joy to all around her. She loved getting together with family and friends to play cards and games. She also loved decorating her house for the seasons. She made every holiday special and was best known for her Hallmark quality Christmas displays.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents Homer and Patricia, in-laws Kenneth and Emily Kahrs, granddaughter April Schamp, niece Dee Issacson, brothers-in-law Elliott Nielsen, Delmer Meyer, Wendell Land, and Terry Steinkruger,.
She will be forever remembered by daughters Deborah (Gary) Schamp, Angela (Mike) Stokes, son Michael (Michelle) Kahrs and Cody (Beth) Anderson. Grandsons Bret (Athena) Schamp, Jobey Stokes, Grant (Makayla Johnson) Kahrs; Granddaughter Delaney Stokes; Great Granddaughter Elsie Schamp; Lane and Layla Anderson; sisters Peg Land and Sheryl (Wayne) Bach, brothers Dennis Gifford and Mike (Michelle) Gifford; brothers-in-law Doug (Betty) Kahrs and Bill (Janea) Kahrs; sisters-in-law Ruth Steinkruger, Judy Meyer Nielson and Sara Beth (Denny) Dorn; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Family will be greeting family and friends from 5pm to 7pm, Tuesday, November 11th at Hutchins Funeral Home, Franklin, Nebraska. Funeral services will 10:30am, Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the United Congregational Church, Franklin, Nebraska with Pastor Kasey Loschen officiating. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Franklin.
